Saffron (Crocus sativus) is one of the most expensive and valuable plants in the world, known as "red gold". This is a perennial bulbous plant of the iris family (Iridaceae), which is grown for the sake of the bright red flower stigmas — they are the spice. Saffron has been used for thousands of years in cooking, medicine and cosmetology.
